Description
A bold, sweet, tangy, and savory jalapeño relish featuring a unique umami twist from soy sauce. Perfect for burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, or grilled vegetables.
Ingredients
1 ½ cups chopped fresh jalapeños (about 10–12 medium)
½ cup chopped red bell pepper
½ cup chopped green bell pepper
1 cup finely chopped onion
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup white vinegar
½ cup apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt
¾ cup granulated sugar
Instructions
- Pulse the jalapeños, red and green bell peppers, and onions in a food processor until finely chopped but not mushy.
- Transfer the mixture to a saucepan and stir in the garlic, white vinegar, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, salt, and sugar.
- Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring often to prevent sticking.
- Reduce the heat and simmer uncovered for 15–20 minutes, until the mixture thickens slightly and vegetables are soft.
- Let the relish cool to room temperature. For a smoother texture, pulse it again in the food processor.
- Store in a clean jar or airtight container in the refrigerator. Let sit for 24 hours to allow the flavors to develop fully.
Notes
Add pineapple or mango for a sweeter variation.
Leave jalapeño seeds or add a serrano pepper for extra heat.
Add smoked paprika or chipotle powder for a smoky flavor.
Mix in fresh cilantro or basil for an herbal kick.
Use a sugar substitute or reduce sugar by half for a lower-sugar option.
Relish keeps in the fridge for up to 3 weeks or longer if properly canned.
