Description

Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup cocoa powder

1/2 cup sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup cold butter, cubed

1/4 cup milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional)


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the cold butter cubes and use a pastry cutter or your hands to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the milk and vanilla extract until just combined. If desired, fold in the chocolate chips.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently a few times. Roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thickness.
  6. Use a round cookie cutter to cut out biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the biscuits are firm and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  8. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

If desired, you can add 1/2 cup chocolate chips or chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans to the dough.

For a spiced variation, add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the dry ingredients.

These biscuits store well for 3-4 days at room temperature or up to a week in the fridge.

To reheat, place in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes.
