Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cocoa powder
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup chocolate chips (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add the cold butter cubes and use a pastry cutter or your hands to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in the milk and vanilla extract until just combined. If desired, fold in the chocolate chips.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently a few times. Roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thickness.
- Use a round cookie cutter to cut out biscuits and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the biscuits are firm and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
If desired, you can add 1/2 cup chocolate chips or chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans to the dough.
For a spiced variation, add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the dry ingredients.
These biscuits store well for 3-4 days at room temperature or up to a week in the fridge.
To reheat, place in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes.
