Ingredients
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2–3 tablespoons milk
Pinch of salt
Food coloring (optional)
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, beat the softened butter until it’s smooth and creamy.
- Add the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt to the bowl and mix until combined.
- Gradually add the milk, one tablespoon at a time, until the frosting reaches a spreadable consistency.
- If you want to add color to the frosting, divide it into smaller bowls and add a few drops of food coloring to each. Mix until the color is fully incorporated.
- Spread the frosting generously onto your cooled sugar cookies using a butter knife or a piping bag.
- Let the frosting set for at least 30 minutes before serving.
Notes
Flavored Frosting: Swap out the vanilla extract for almond extract or any other flavor extract you like.
Chocolate Frosting: Add 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder along with the powdered sugar.
Citrus Frosting: Add lemon or orange zest for a fresh twist.
Storage: Store any leftover frosting in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or in the fridge for up to a week.
If refrigerated frosting becomes too stiff, add a small amount of milk to loosen it up before using again.
