Description
These diner-style patty melts feature juicy beef patties, sweet caramelized onions, melted Swiss and cheddar cheese, and a tangy secret sauce grilled between crispy, buttery rye bread. Each bite delivers the perfect balance of savory, creamy, and slightly sweet flavors.
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
Salt to taste
Black pepper to taste
8 slices rye bread
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1 large onion, thinly sliced
4 slices Swiss cheese
4 slices cheddar cheese
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
1 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
- Cook the sliced onions in a skillet over medium heat with a small amount of butter, stirring occasionally for about 15 minutes until soft and deeply golden. Set aside.
- In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, sweet pickle relish, and garlic powder until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to use.
- Divide the ground beef into four equal portions and shape into thin patties slightly larger than the bread slices. Season both sides with salt and black pepper.
- Cook the patties in a skillet over medium-high heat for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until fully cooked through and browned. Remove from heat.
- Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Place four slices butter-side down in a clean skillet over medium heat.
- Layer each with one slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked beef patty, caramelized onions, one slice of cheddar cheese, and a generous spread of the secret sauce.
- Top with the remaining bread slices, butter-side up. Grill for 2 to 3 minutes per side, pressing gently, until the bread is golden brown and crispy and the cheese is melted.
- Remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve hot.
