Ingredients
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
Red or pink food coloring (gel preferred)
½ cup powdered sugar, for rolling
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Cream the softened butter and sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
- Mix in the egg and vanilla extract until smooth.
- In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring just until a dough forms.
- Add a few drops of red or pink gel food coloring and mix until desired color is reached.
- Chill the dough for 30 minutes.
- Scoop out tablespoon-sized portions and roll them into balls.
- Roll each dough ball in powdered sugar until fully coated.
- Place the balls on the prepared baking sheet, about 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes, until tops are crackled and edges are set.
- Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
Add heart-shaped sprinkles after baking for extra flair.
Replace some vanilla with almond extract for a different flavor.
Add 2 tablespoons cocoa powder for a chocolate version.
Use strawberry extract for a fruity variation.
Change food coloring for different holidays or themes.
