Description

A quick, rich, and fluffy chocolate mug cake made with simple pantry ingredients and cooked in the microwave. This easy eggless single-serving dessert is ready in about seven minutes.

Ingredients

4 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons cocoa powder

3 tablespoons sugar

1/4 teaspoon baking powder

Pinch of salt

3 tablespoons milk

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon chocolate chips, optional

1 tablespoon water, if needed for consistency

Instructions

  1. Add the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt to a microwave-safe mug. Stir until evenly combined.
  2. Pour in the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Stir until a smooth batter forms, scraping the bottom and sides of the mug to remove any pockets of dry flour.
  3. If the batter is unusually thick, stir in 1 tablespoon of water to loosen it slightly.
  4. Fold in the chocolate chips, if using.
  5. Microwave on high for 60–90 seconds, starting with 60 seconds and adding additional time only as needed. The cake is ready when it has risen and the center appears set rather than visibly wet.
  6. Let the mug cake cool for 1–2 minutes before serving, as both the mug and cake will be very hot.

Notes

Use a microwave-safe mug around 10–12 ounces to leave enough room for the cake to rise.

Chocolate chips are optional and can be omitted or increased for a richer chocolate flavor.

For a creamy center, add a spoonful of peanut butter or another nut butter to the batter.

Try a small amount of peppermint extract or a pinch of instant espresso powder for a flavor variation.

Chopped nuts or caramel sauce can be added for extra texture and richness.

Serve warm with whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, fresh berries, or powdered sugar.

Dairy milk or unsweetened almond, oat, or soy milk can be used.

Avoid overcooking, which can make the mug cake rubbery or dry. Microwave wattages vary, so add extra cooking time in short intervals.

The cake is best enjoyed immediately. Leftovers can be covered and refrigerated for 1–2 days and reheated in 10–15 second intervals until just warm.
