Description

These homemade cinnamon ornaments are an easy, fragrant holiday craft made with just three simple ingredients. Perfect for Christmas trees, festive garlands, and handmade gift decorations, they bring a warm cinnamon aroma and rustic charm to your holiday decor. For decorative use only, not edible.

Ingredients

⅔ cup ground cinnamon

2 tablespoons ground allspice

½ cup cinnamon applesauce

Extra ground cinnamon, as needed if the dough is sticky

Instructions

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the ground cinnamon and ground allspice. Stir until evenly mixed and free of large clumps.
  2. Add the cinnamon applesauce to the dry ingredients. Stir with a spoon or spatula until a thick dough begins to form.
  3. Knead the dough gently with your hands until smooth and moldable. If the dough feels too sticky, gradually add a little extra ground cinnamon until it reaches a workable consistency.
  4. Place the dough between two sheets of parchment paper. Roll it out evenly to approximately ¼-inch thickness.
  5. Remove the top sheet of parchment paper and use holiday cookie cutters to cut out stars, Christmas trees, hearts, snowflakes, or other festive shapes. Gather and reroll the scraps to make additional ornaments.
  6. Transfer the cut ornaments to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Use a drinking straw or wooden skewer to make a small hanging hole near the top of each ornament, leaving enough space around the hole to prevent breakage.
  7. Preheat the oven to 200°F (95°C). Bake the ornaments for approximately 2 hours, carefully turning them over halfway through baking. Continue baking slightly longer if necessary until the ornaments feel completely firm and dry.
  8. Remove the ornaments from the oven and allow them to cool completely. Thread ribbon, string, or twine through the holes and tie securely. Decorate as desired and use the finished ornaments on Christmas trees, garlands, or wrapped gifts. These ornaments are for decoration only and must not be eaten.

Notes

Decorative use only: These cinnamon ornaments are not edible. Keep them away from young children and pets who might mistake them for cookies.

Dough consistency: If the dough is sticky, add extra ground cinnamon a little at a time. If it becomes dry or crumbly, knead in a tiny amount of applesauce.

Even thickness: Roll the dough to approximately ¼ inch thick to help prevent cracking and ensure even drying.

Alternative drying method: Air-dry the ornaments on parchment paper in a well-ventilated area for several days, turning occasionally until completely firm.

Spice variations: Replace a small portion of the cinnamon with ground cloves, nutmeg, or ginger for a different holiday fragrance while keeping the total dry ingredient quantity similar.

Decorating ideas: Use colorful ribbons, rustic twine, acrylic craft paint, or lightweight embellishments. Allow paint to dry completely before displaying or storing.

Personalized ornaments: Press initials or short names into the dough using letter stamps before baking to create reusable gift tags.

Storage: Store completely dry ornaments in a sturdy container with parchment paper or tissue paper between layers. Keep in a cool, dry place away from humidity and direct sunlight.

Shelf life: Properly dried and stored ornaments may last for several holiday seasons. Discard any that develop mold, significant softening, or deterioration.

Refreshing the fragrance: Lightly dust ornaments with ground cinnamon or display them near a cinnamon stick. Avoid adding water or other liquids.

Yield: Makes approximately 10 ornaments, depending on cookie cutter size and dough thickness.

Cooling time: Allow additional time for ornaments to cool completely before decorating or storing.
