Description

Rich, fudgy homemade brownies with slightly crisp edges and plenty of chocolate chips. This beginner-friendly recipe uses simple ingredients and straightforward steps that are great for family baking with adult supervision.

Ingredients

1 tablespoon butter, softened, for greasing the pan

1/2 cup (1 stick) plus 2 tablespoons butter, melted

1 cup sugar

2 eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/2 cup chocolate chips, melted

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Use the softened butter to thoroughly grease a 9 x 13-inch baking pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk the melted butter and sugar together until well combined.
  3. Add the eggs and vanilla extract and whisk until the mixture is smooth.
  4. Place 1/2 cup chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in 15-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until completely melted and smooth. An adult should handle or closely supervise this step when baking with kids because the bowl and chocolate can become hot.
  5. Pour the melted chocolate into the batter and whisk until evenly incorporated.
  6. Add the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Stir just until no dry pockets of flour or cocoa remain, taking care not to overmix.
  7. Gently fold in the remaining 1 cup chocolate chips until evenly distributed.
  8. Spread the brownie batter evenly in the prepared baking pan.
  9. Bake for about 30 minutes, or until the brownies are set in the center. Check with a toothpick, keeping in mind that melted chocolate chips may leave chocolate on the toothpick even when the brownies are done.
  10. Let the brownies cool for at least 5 minutes before cutting and serving. Allow them to cool longer for cleaner slices.

Notes

Adult supervision is recommended when children are using the microwave, handling hot melted ingredients, or working near the oven.

Semisweet, milk, dark, or a combination of chocolate chips can be used.

For extra crunch, fold chopped walnuts or pecans into the batter, checking for nut allergies before serving.

Add colorful baking sprinkles before baking or dust completely cooled brownies with powdered sugar for a decorative finish.

For extra chocolate flavor, sprinkle additional chocolate chips over the batter before baking.

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for 3 to 4 days.

Freeze completely cooled brownies in an airtight freezer-safe container for up to 3 months, separating layers with parchment paper if needed. Thaw at room temperature before serving.

For a warm brownie, microwave an individual serving briefly in short intervals to avoid overheating.
