Description

These gluten-free apple turnovers feature flaky puff pastry filled with tender cinnamon-spiced apples for a cozy homemade treat. Perfect for breakfast, dessert, or an afternoon snack, they bake up golden and delicious in under an hour.

Ingredients

1 package gluten-free puff pastry, thawed

2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and finely diced

3 tbsp brown sugar

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

1 tbsp lemon juice

1 tsp cornstarch

1 egg, beaten

Coarse sugar for sprinkling (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch until evenly mixed.
  3. Roll out the gluten-free puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and cut it into 4 to 6 equal squares.
  4. Spoon the apple filling onto one half of each pastry square, leaving a small border around the edges.
  5. Lightly brush the edges with water, fold the pastry into triangles, and seal the edges with a fork.
  6. Place the turnovers on the prepared baking sheet, brush the tops with beaten egg, and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
  7. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes until puffed and golden brown.
  8. Allow the turnovers to cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Add chopped walnuts or pecans to the filling for extra crunch.

Use a mix of tart and sweet apples for more complex flavor.

Raisins or dried cranberries can be added for extra sweetness.

Drizzle cooled turnovers with a simple vanilla glaze for a bakery-style finish.

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.

Reheat in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 5 to 8 minutes to restore crispness.

Freeze baked turnovers for up to 2 months and reheat before serving.
