Description

Old-Fashioned Peaches and Cream combines juicy, sugar-macerated fresh peaches with softly whipped vanilla cream. This nostalgic no-cook summer dessert is ready in just 10 minutes.

Ingredients

Fresh ripe peaches, sliced

Heavy cream, chilled

Granulated sugar

Vanilla extract

Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Wash the peaches thoroughly. Peel them if desired, then slice them into evenly sized wedges.
  2. Place the sliced peaches in a bowl, sprinkle with granulated sugar, and gently toss until evenly coated.
  3. Let the peaches rest for about 10 minutes so the sugar draws out their juices and creates a light syrup.
  4. While the peaches rest, pour the chilled heavy cream into a cold mixing bowl.
  5. Add the vanilla extract and a small pinch of salt.
  6. Whip the cream until soft and lightly thickened. Stop while it is still smooth and somewhat pourable rather than whipping to stiff peaks.
  7. Divide the macerated peaches and their juices among four serving bowls.
  8. Generously spoon or drizzle the freshly whipped cream over the peaches and serve immediately.

Notes

Peeling the peaches is optional. Leave the skins on for extra color and texture or peel them for a softer dessert.

Add a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or cardamom to the peaches for a warm-spiced variation.

For crunch, top with toasted pecans, walnuts, sliced almonds, crumbled shortbread cookies, or granola.

For extra sweetness, drizzle with honey or maple syrup. Reduce the granulated sugar when using exceptionally sweet peaches.

Fresh berries, nectarines, or sliced plums can replace some of the peaches.

For make-ahead preparation, refrigerate the peaches and whipped cream separately in airtight containers and assemble shortly before serving.

Use the prepared peaches within 1 to 2 days and the whipped cream within about 24 hours for the best texture.

Freezing the assembled dessert is not recommended because the peaches can soften and the cream may separate.

Fresh peaches provide the best texture, but well-drained canned peaches or thawed frozen peaches can be substituted.
